Senior Fitness Plans

According to MacroTrends.net, the average life expectancy in the United States for 2022 is 79.05 years.  According to Statista there are 92,000 centenarians in the United States. That number is projected to jump to a whopping 589,000 by 2060.

The age at which we are considered a senior citizen fluctuates depending on where you look. Medicare says 65, while one is able to begin collecting Social Security at 62.  That leaves a long time remaining in the average life in America.

So many of today’s seniors are in far better physical condition than even a generation ago. They are competing in bodybuilding competitions, running races, and living overall healthier lives.  What is their secret?

There is no real secret.  A body in motion tends to stay in motion.  If you are healthy young you will likely be healthy when older.  What if you have fallen out of fitness?  There’s good news, you can get back to the healthiest version of yourself at any age.

Naturally the first and most important part is checking with your primary care physician and making sure it is safe for you to exercise.  We here at Mind Body Spine and Cape Kettlebell can administer a fitness assessment as well which will give us a better idea of what you can and cannot do.  Once you get the green light there are many ways to get and stay fit.

Walking is the easiest way.  Got a pair of sneakers? Got a road? You’re all set.  The CDC recommends that all Americans get at least 150 minutes per week of exercise.  Walking 30 minutes a day 5 times a week gets you there.

There are senior-centric yoga classes, including chair yoga, that allow you to get many of the benefits of the practice without putting undue strain on the body.  Water aerobics or Pilates are also great options.

Although resistance training, specifically with dumbbells or kettlebells, might seem intimidating there are many benefits to building muscle at any age.  A basic strength training class or guided personal training can help you get to where you want to be safely.

Whether you are thinking of getting back into fitness, or simply trying to keep yourself as fit as possible as you continue on the road of life, we can help.  Mind Body Spine and Cape Kettlebell are staffed with professionals in chiropractic, fitness training, all-inclusive classes, nutrition, and more!
